Keys handed over for stage 1 & 2 of Iluka Resources’ Cataby Mineral Sands project.
Keys were handed over this week ahead of schedule after the completion of two stages of our work at Iluka Resources’ $275 million Cataby Mineral Sands Project. Grounded Construction Group was recently awarded the contract for installing two mining villages and a mine infrastructure administration and maintenance facility for the entire sands project. Development taking place over three stages. The recent completion of stage one and two took place over six months for Tronox Limited in Cataby and Iluka Resources in Dandaragan.
Stage one of the project included a 260-person mining village. The Greenfield site required bulk earthworks, concreting, sealed roads and the transport of buildings. Turnkey operations integrated landscaping, building and recreational facilities.
In a contoured and spacious design, generous outdoor and sporting facilities were constructed including a swimming pool, tennis court, gymnasium and BBQ, allowing for workers on site to enjoy a healthy experience during their time off.
As with all Grounded Construction Group projects, best practice methods were used to install accommodation facilities. The entire project included the installation of all waste and water treatment plants, electrical, plumbing, communications, bitumen roads, line-marking and car parks.
“A Project Manager is only as good as the resources available to them within the company, and these two concurrently constructed camps were testament to the people and processes in place at Grounded Construction Group.” Said Samuel Lait, Project Manager.
Stage two in Dandgaragan included the build of a 180-person elevated campsite. Similar to that of stage one, the project included bulk earthworks, concreting, construction of sealed roads, transportation of buildings and cranage.
Generous outdoor and recreational facilities were installed in addition to best practice accommodation facilities.
Completing the project with waste and water treatment plants, electrical, plumbing, communications, bitumen roads, line-marking, car parks and the install of a maintenance shed.
“Our team of project managers and contractors have all worked cohesively and cooperatively to complete these two major stages ahead of schedule and on budget. We are ecstatic to be part of such an important project for WA mining and developing our relationship further with Iluka Resources.” Said Paul Natoli, Managing Director.
Grounded Construction Group is currently working on the beginning stages of stage 3.
The Cataby mineral sands deposit, located north of Perth, Western Australia, is a chloride ilmenite deposit with associated zircon and rutile production.
Cataby is expected to have an economic life of approximately 8.5 years.
The heavy mineral concentrate produced at the site will be processed into final products at Iluka’s Narngulu mineral separation plant. The chloride ilmenite product will be suitable for both sale or as a feed source for the production of synthetic rutile.
The project was approved in December 2017 with first production expected in Q2 2019
